What This Course Is Really About

This programme is best suited to candidates who are serious about pursuing guiding as a career.
This course is designed for people who want to work in the guiding industry, not just experience the bush. Training at Kukama is practical, structured, and rooted in the realities of professional field guiding in Southern Africa. You’ll spend most of your time outdoors, learning through real scenarios, consistent assessment, and close mentorship.

Qualifying as a field guide is about more than time spent in the bush. It means meeting recognised industry standards, being assessed consistently, and demonstrating the skills required to guide professionally and responsibly.

At Kukama, training is structured around the NQF2 Nature Site Guide qualification — the official entry-level requirement to work as a guide in South Africa. Throughout the course, students are evaluated on practical field skills, knowledge, and professional conduct, ensuring they are prepared for real guiding work, not just the idea of it.

Training follows a structured daily routine and runs over a fixed period, with clear expectations set from the outset. Students should be prepared for early mornings, time spent in the field, regular assessments, and a physically active environment. The course is designed to simulate the realities of professional guiding, not accommodate part-time or casual participation.

Commitment to the full duration of the course is essential, as progress and qualification are built through continuous participation and assessment.

What’s Included in the Course

Uniform & Essential Field Gear

Each student receives the required uniform and core field equipment at the start of the course, including binoculars, a backpack, and prescribed study materials.

This equipment package is valued at approximately R15,000 and ensures students are properly prepared for field-based training.

Accommodation & Daily Living

Full-board accommodation is included for the duration of the course, along with all meals and laundry services.

Students are able to focus entirely on their training without managing external living arrangements.
